The staff at the Oral History Centre are saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Derksen.

Jim’s contributions to the disability rights movement in Manitoba, and to our community, were numerous. Jim was an organizer, an activist, and an advocate for persons with disabilities, who worked in many community and government roles toward improving disability services in Manitoba and in Canada. He was the first Executive Director of the Manitoba Disabilities Issues Office, and went on to receive several honours acknowledging his efforts, including the Manitoba Human Rights Commitment Award (2002).

We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know Jim through our role in assisting in with the  Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities Oral History Project.

Our sympathy to Jim’s family, friends, and community.
