Oral History Project Administrator

Janet Walker Consulting (JWC) is seeking an independent contractor to fill the position of Oral History Project Administrator for an upcoming life story interview project.

Position Description:

This is a two-year role with variable hours beginning in the fall of 2024 and ending in the fall of 2026, including an estimated up to 150 hours in each year. Hourly pay in the range of $25.00 – $35.00 per hour commensurate with skill, experience and credentials. The successful candidate will directly assist the Project Manager/Interviewer. The Project Administrator will be responsible for administrative tasks associated with the recorded interviews including scheduling interviews; recordkeeping including filing documentations, logging metadata and maintaining a file system with backup; and post-interview processing tasks such as recording interview metadata, transcription, indexing, and summarizing interviews. The role offers an opportunity for the successful candidate to take on, over time, additional responsibilities including research, analysis and collaboration with the Project Manager.

The administrative work must be largely completed remotely, with in-person meetings and interview support required periodically.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have graduated from or be registered in, at minimum, the 3rd year of a B.A. Program or be in the final year of their studies, ideally at the University of Winnipeg and must have a basic level of formal oral history training, such as the “Introduction to Oral History” workshop series provided by the University of Winnipeg Oral History Centre. 

Those with experience in oral history, history, archival studies, library and information studies, and data management are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be highly organized, efficient, and able to maintain a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and clarity in communication. The ability to meet deadlines and coordinate activities with the Project Manager is essential, in addition to the following qualifications:

  • Competence in digital media including Microsoft Office applications, specifically MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience in completing effective academic research, writing summaries, and developing annotated
  • bibliography are among desirable assets. Additional assets include:
  • Knowledge of electronic file types associated with documents, photographs, and A/V media.
  • Experience in performing academic research using online databases, scholarly publications, and online
  • resources such as historical newspapers.
  • Familiarity with 20th Century Winnipeg, and local history, national history, or business history.

 

Salary Range: $25.00-$35.00
